New Year, New Perspective

New Years resolutions are not always successful (in fact they rarely are; more than 80% fail within a few months), but I wanted to talk to you about more than resolutions. I'm taking 2013 to reassess my life perspective. My goal this year is not like 4.5 million other people in Minnesota. I don't want to lose 50 pounds by doing a crazy diet scheme and insane workout regimen for a couple weeks, only to burn out and add another failure to my list. My goal is to fuel my body with real foods. This is a big transition, as most foods consumed by Americans are anything BUT real, so I am prepared for this to take the majority of the year to really stick.


Why would I spend that lengthy amount of time to do something?
Because my life is worth it.


When I get frustrated with what I cannot do at the present time, I think back to all the wonderful things my body has allowed me to accomplish. My body still allows me to move - just not in the same way. Sometimes I get frustrated with back and neck pain. Then I realize I have to stretch, and get frustrated with my lack of flexibility compared to my past flexibility.


I can get back most of my former flexibility, but it's like that first car you drove into the ground. Towards the end of that ownership it could still drive - it just took some coaxing to start it up again, right? Eventually you begrudgingly had to get a new car. That beat-up car felt like part of you didn't it? The only thing different with this analogy is
you only get one body. You can replace some of the parts, but in the end, this is what you've got. Don't you want to get the most out of this?


I challenge you to make goals this year that will push you. Maybe your goal is to be able to drive again, or maybe it's a goal to be able to play with your grand-kids for more than a few minutes.
Whatever your goal is, know that it takes at least 12 weeks to make a practice a habit. When it becomes habitual you start doing it without thinking. Moving your body is something you need daily. Most resolutions fail because we are American- we want it to change instantaneously. When inevitably does not work right away, we give up.


Don't give up!
I'm here to work with you through this process. After incorporating wellness into your life, your body will thank you. You will have increased energy, more strength, improved sleep, and less injuries.
